Evaluating the Adequacy of Satellite-Based Rainfall Estimates and its Application for Improved Hydrological Modeling

Hydrological modelling studies rely on accurate and reliable rainfall estimates among other forcing variables such as actual evapotranspiration. The performance of model simulations often directly relates to the accuracy of input data that drives the hydrologic model. Times series of rainfall estimates are commonly available through rain gauge stations. In many developing countries, resources to install and monitor gauges are limited and socio economic issues are predominant. Therefore, the lack of spatially and temporally distributed rainfall estimates constrain detailed hydrological model studies. Alternative to gauge estimates, are Satellite-based Rainfall Estimates (SREs). SREs provide rainfall estimates in a consistent manner since estimates are provided as gridded rainfall product and repeated according to the revisit time of the satellite. Ample research has been performed to assess the reliability of SREs and their adequacy to replace in-situ rainfall gauges installed in the field. In this study, adequacy of SREs will be tested using two approaches: (i) by evaluating HBV/SWAT Hydrologiska Byråns Vattenbalansavdelning/Soil and Water Assessment Tool hydrological models’ performance for a) gauged rainfall data, b) SRE data and c) bias corrected SRE data (ii) by developing Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves using satellite based rainfall estimated and its application for inundation mapping. The study aims to assess how model parameters and simulations are affected when gauged rainfall model input is replaced by satellite based rainfall estimates. Model performance will be evaluated by different statistical indices such as Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency coefficient (NSE), Relative Volumetric Error (RVE), and Taylor’s diagram, and a weighted combination of NSE and RVE objective functions. Results of this study will help in better understanding of the applicability of SREs for rainfall-runoff modeling and water resources assessments in general.
